Listen to Me! By Julie Carr -- Pg 8

So the next day, I got to miss school. And guess what? The police believed me. They gave me an ice cream cone. They told me it was because I kept telling someone until they believed. But I think it's because it was hot, and they wanted one, too.

So I went home and said, "Listen to me."

They asked, "Little One, what's wrong?"

I told them everything that had happened. Deep down I knew this time was different. But I was still scared for I didn't want them to say I was lying or to get into trouble.
Their first words was, "Oh, Little One, why didn't you tell us last night. It's not your fault you could not sleep. We have to go tell the police. They have been asking for anyone to come forward with information."

I went to Danger and said, "I give up. Nobody will believe a second grader."

"Remember the saying that goes something like this- if someone is hurting someone, and you don't think it is right, then you must keep telling someone- anyone until that someone says 'I believe' and does something about it."

"Oh Danger, thank you so much. But who do I tell?"

"How about your mommy and daddy?"

"Oh, no, I can't do that. I was supposed to be in bed and they will be mad at me."

"Little One, think about this. If you tell any other adult and they believe you, your parents will soon find out."

"You're right. I'll tell them tonight."

At recess I went to the office to talk to him. "Listen to me," I cried.

"Of course, I will."

So I told him, and I received my second blow.

"Oh, Little One, why must you lie? The Turtle family would never do that. Go back to class, and if you want to use that wonderful imagination of yours maybe you should become a writer."

Danger, my best friend, came up and said, "Guess what? Last night, I over heard my dad was telling my mom about Trouble being sent to the hospital. Trouble claims he fell down a flight of stairs, but Dad don't think he's telling the truth."

"I know. I saw his mom hit him, but nobody will believe me."

"I believe you and you know what they keep telling us, one must keep telling an adult until one believes. Try telling the principal."

I went up to my teacher and cried, "Listen to me."
 She said, "Of course."

So I told her everything I saw the night before.

She gave me the first blow. "Oh, Little One, will you please go sit down and quit making up things."

And of course I went and sat down for I always listen to my teacher. But I didn't think I should give up on telling someone. I once was taught, "If you believe in what you say, then keep telling someone until they believe," so I thought, "Who would believe?

I saw Lady turtle, who was well known in the community, hitting her child, Trouble. Then she saw me, and yelled, "If you tell anyone, you'll be next." I was so scared.

"What should I do? I can't tell Daddy and Mommy. They will be mad because I didn't go to sleep. I know, I'll tell my teacher first thing in the morning."

Listen to Me! By Julie Carr -- Pg 1

It all started on a cold night in the middle of May. I was a second grader, but that shouldn't make any difference. Should it? I often asked myself.

Daddy Squirrel said, "Little One, go up stairs and go to bed."

Of course I always listen to Daddy Squirrel. But that night, I couldn't sleep. So I got up and stood next to my bedroom window. That's when I saw something I shouldn't have.
